TRANSFORMER DESIGN, OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, TESTING & ASSESSMENT

25 - 26 NOVEMBER 2026

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This particular course is designed to provide knowledge and guidance on appropriate method of design, operation, maintenance, testing and assessment to continuously sustain the transformer efficiencies and voltage stability throughout its operation with the objective to achieve optimum output performance. The transformer is a static equipment which has no moving parts but neglecting appropriate monitoring and maintenance may lower down the operational output performance in a very short period of time, and subsequently may disrupt the smooth operation of the industries, increase maintenance cost and reduce production.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Explain the core concepts, terminology and working principles related to Transformer Design & Operation.
- Apply structured methods and industry good practices for Chapter 1, Historical review, and Transformer definition and fundamental.
- Evaluate relevant general technical training situations and identify risks, gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Translate the learning into practical workplace actions and sound technical decisions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

- Managers, Engineers
- Supervisors, Technicians,
- Chargeman
- Operation and Maintenance personnel who are involved with Operation & Maintenance of Transformer in the power generation, utilities, manufacturing and service industries

COURSE CONTENT

- Session 1: Transformer fundamentals and construction: historical overview, operating principles, internal and external features, and accessories
- Session 2: Insulation systems: functions and requirements of liquid/mineral oil and solid insulation
- Session 3: Maintenance and inspection: power-transformer inspection, bushings, cooling systems, insulation systems, maintenance types, and requirements
- Session 4: Factory testing: routine, special, and type tests, including IEC, IEEE, and other applicable standards
- Session 5: Insulation degradation: oil contamination and moisture, paper degradation, oil-paper effects, and moisture assessment
- Session 6: Condition assessment using insulating oil: in-service oil classification, test standards, objectives, interpretation, and periodic testing programmes
- Session 7: Fault-gas analysis: gas generation and classification, laboratory analysis, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA) interpretation
- Session 8: Practical application: case studies on transformer maintenance, inspection, and assessment, supported by presentations, group discussion, and Q&A
