Practical Understanding and Application of Power Quality Issues and Mitigation Solutions

16 - 17 FEBRUARY 2027

8 CDP Approved by ST

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Power quality disturbances can disrupt electrical equipment and business operations. This two-day technical programme develops a practical understanding of power quality phenomena, parameters, monitoring and mitigation options. Participants examine voltage sags, swells and transients, harmonics, wiring and grounding, and the effects of distributed generation. Standards reviews, monitoring-data interpretation and industrial investigation case studies connect the concepts to troubleshooting and the selection of appropriate solutions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Recognise symptoms of power quality problems, including sags, swells, under- and overvoltage, harmonics, transients, electrical noise and interruptions.
- Explain how wiring and grounding arrangements can contribute to power quality issues.
- Classify power quality events using the IEEE, ITIC and international standards discussed in the course.
- Explain the application of monitoring tools and interpret power quality data.
- Compare mitigation approaches for voltage disturbances and harmonic effects.
- Relate investigation findings and case studies to operational and business impacts.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This programme is suitable for electrical engineers, maintenance and facilities personnel, technicians, energy-management practitioners and other professionals responsible for investigating electrical disturbances, reviewing power quality measurements or selecting mitigation measures.

COURSE CONTENT

- Session 1: Understanding power quality - definitions and core concepts; recognising common symptoms and phenomena; the distinction between electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and power quality.
- Session 2: Power quality standards - review of IEC coverage, local standards and the purpose of power quality requirements.
- Session 3: Wiring and grounding - their influence on power quality; wiring configurations that contribute to problems; local wiring methods and installation practices.
- Session 4: Voltage swells and transients - definitions, causes and mitigation approaches.
- Session 5: Voltage dips and sags - definitions, causes, operational impact and mitigation approaches.
- Session 6: Harmonics - definitions, sources, effects and techniques to reduce harmonic-related problems.
- Session 7: Power quality monitoring management - load profiles, assessment techniques, incident profiling and monitoring of electrical systems.
- Session 8: Distributed generation and power quality - effects on distribution networks, likely disturbances and user-end mitigation solutions.
- Session 9: Case-study discussion - practical investigations involving voltage dips and sags, harmonics and transients, and their business implications.
