
HANDS-ON WELDING WORKSHOP

COURSE INTRODUCTION
This four-day practical workshop develops essential welding knowledge and hands-on capability across Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Participants learn safe working practices, process and consumable selection, weld terminology and common imperfections before applying the techniques to carbon-steel plate exercises. The workshop helps participants connect sound welding practice with the quality, reliability and safety of fabricated components.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Apply essential safety practices for workshop welding activities.
- Explain the operating principles and applications of SMAW, GTAW and GMAW.
- Select suitable basic equipment and consumables for common carbon-steel welding tasks.
- Recognise common weld imperfections, their causes and prevention measures.
- Prepare and produce basic bead-on-plate, fillet-weld and butt-weld exercises.
- Evaluate completed welds against basic workmanship and quality requirements.

This workshop is suitable for welders, welding technicians, fabrication and maintenance personnel, inspectors, supervisors and engineers who need practical exposure to SMAW, GTAW and GMAW processes on carbon steel.

- Welding safety, personal protective equipment and workshop controls
- Welding terminology, joint types, positions and basic preparation
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding equipment, electrodes and operating technique
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding equipment, shielding gas, tungsten and filler materials
- Gas Metal Arc Welding equipment, transfer principles and consumables
- Common weld imperfections, causes and prevention
- Carbon-steel bead-on-plate and fillet-weld practice
- Carbon-steel butt-weld practice in selected positions
- Visual review and basic quality assessment of completed welds
