Understanding & Interpreting Welding Quality Documentation
14 - 15 JANUARY 2027
COURSE INTRODUCTION
This two-day programme helps professionals involved in welding-related work understand, interpret and verify welding procedures and quality documentation against project requirements, applicable codes and specifications. It focuses on what to check, why each record matters and how to identify errors, omissions and non-conformities during fabrication, inspection and audits.
Practical, guided exercises use typical project records to show how material certificates, welding qualifications, inspection reports and weld history documentation fit together. Participants develop a structured approach to document review that supports traceability, quality-control decisions and the prevention of rework and delays.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose and structure of common welding and inspection documents.
- Verify documents against project requirements, applicable codes and specifications.
- Identify errors, omissions and non-conformities by referring to approved procedures.
- Apply practical document-review techniques during inspections and audits.
- Improve documentation traceability, compliance and quality assurance.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Engineers, QA/QC inspectors, welding inspectors, QA/QC coordinators, supervisors, document controllers and technical personnel involved in fabrication, construction and inspection. The programme is particularly relevant to those who witness, review, approve or rely on welding and inspection documentation.
COURSE CONTENT
- Session 1: Inspection and Test Plans - use the ITP as a working document to organise inspection activities and checks.
- Session 2: Inspection and audit planning - plan project-stage activities using Gantt charts, Critical Path Analysis and PERT.
- Session 3: Contract review and subcontractor control - review essential contract conditions before placement and understand documentation requirements.
- Session 4: Materials and inspection - interpret mechanical properties, material certification requirements and traceability, including Material Test Certificates (MTCs).
- Session 5: Welding procedure and welder qualification documentation - understand and review WPS, WPQR/PQR and WPQ/WQT records against applicable requirements.
- Session 6: Quality in welding - company manuals, QA and QC, quality-related standards and product sign-off.
- Session 7: Heat treatment of welded structures - preheat, hot-rolled, TMCP, normalised, quenched and tempered, annealed and stress-relieved conditions; effects on material properties; review of PWHT procedures and charts.
- Session 8: Pressure testing - procedures and records for vessels and pipework, certification requirements and evidence of fitness for service.
- Session 9: Non-conformances, concessions and engineering queries - identify departures from specifications, standards and codes and review the associated documentation.
- Session 10: Non-destructive testing - working knowledge of NDT methods used during a contract and practical interpretation of NDT procedures and reports.
- Session 11: Destructive testing - review welding procedure qualification test coupons, mechanical-property checks and the soundness of joint materials.
- Session 12: Manufacturing Record Book case study - guided review of material certificates, weld history, welder qualification and audit records, PWHT charts, NDT reports and pressure-test reports; check the final documentation package for completeness, traceability and compliance.
