TROUBLESHOOTING AND MAINTENANCE OF MOTORS

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Electric motors are critical assets in industrial plants, utilities and building services, where unexpected failures can interrupt production and damage connected equipment. This two-day programme develops a structured approach to motor reliability, covering motor construction and operation, common failure modes, inspection and testing, bearings and lubrication, alignment, protection, maintenance planning and practical fault diagnosis. Participants learn how to interpret operating symptoms and test results so that corrective actions address the underlying cause instead of only the immediate failure.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Explain the construction, operating principles and principal components of common industrial motors.
- Recognise electrical, mechanical, thermal and environmental causes of motor deterioration.
- Plan routine inspections and preventive-maintenance activities for motors and their driven equipment.
- Select appropriate checks and tests for insulation, windings, current, temperature, vibration and mechanical condition.
- Identify bearing, lubrication, alignment, cooling, loading and power-supply problems.
- Interpret common motor symptoms and apply a logical troubleshooting sequence.
- Recommend corrective and follow-up actions that improve motor safety, reliability and service life.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Maintenance and electrical engineers, technicians, supervisors, chargemen, facilities personnel and production-support teams responsible for operating, inspecting, maintaining or troubleshooting industrial electric motors and their driven equipment.

COURSE CONTENT

- Session 1: Industrial motor fundamentals, construction, operating principles, motor types and nameplate information
- Session 2: Motor failure mechanisms and symptoms involving supply quality, windings, insulation, loading, temperature and the operating environment
- Session 3: Inspection and electrical-condition checks, including visual inspection, insulation resistance, winding resistance, current balance and temperature observations
- Session 4: Mechanical condition, covering bearings, lubrication, alignment, mounting, coupling, cooling and vibration-related symptoms
- Session 5: Motor starting, control and protection, including common starters, overload protection, phase-loss and unbalance considerations
- Session 6: Preventive and condition-based maintenance planning, inspection intervals, maintenance records and acceptance criteria
- Session 7: A structured troubleshooting process for failure to start, nuisance tripping, overheating, abnormal noise, vibration and reduced performance
- Session 8: Practical fault scenarios, root-cause review, corrective-action selection and recurrence prevention
