A COMPREHENSIVE AND PRACTICAL APPROACH TO INTERPRETING TECHNICAL DRAWINGS AND DIAGRAMS

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Technical drawings are essential for understanding how industrial systems are designed, connected and operated. This practical programme develops participants' confidence in reading common engineering drawings and diagrams, with particular emphasis on piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). Participants learn how to navigate drawing indexes, abbreviations, symbols, equipment tags, line classes and specification changes, then relate the information on a drawing to real plant equipment, troubleshooting and maintenance decisions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Distinguish the common engineering drawings and diagrams used in industrial facilities.
- Interpret the structure, purpose and information flow of a piping and instrumentation diagram.
- Use drawing indexes, legends and common abbreviations to locate technical information efficiently.
- Recognise instrument-line, valve, process-equipment and mechanical-equipment symbols.
- Interpret instrument tags, line numbers, line classes, specification breaks and size changes.
- Relate drawing information to physical plant systems for maintenance and troubleshooting decisions.
