DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF WATER RETAINING STRUCTURES & WATERPROOFING PROTECTION OF BASEMENT AND UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES

26 - 27 NOVEMBER 2026

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This practical programme gives participants a structured, workplace-focused understanding of Design and Construction of Water Retaining Structures & Waterproofing Protection. Key areas include Introduction of Eurocodes ECO, EC1 & EC2, Concrete Structures for Water Retaining/Containment, and Design Codes, with emphasis on practical understanding, workplace application and confident decision-making. The programme connects key concepts with practical examples that participants can apply in their own workplace.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Explain the core concepts, terminology and working principles related to Design and Construction of Water Retaining Structures & Waterproofing Protection.
- Apply structured methods and industry good practices for Introduction of Eurocodes ECO, EC1 & EC2, Concrete Structures for Water Retaining/Containment, and Design Codes.
- Evaluate relevant general technical training situations and identify risks, gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Translate the learning into practical workplace actions and sound technical decisions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is suitable for practicing civil and structural engineers, young engineers in their formative years, engineering students and academics who wish to enhance their knowledge and understanding on the design and construction of mega water retaining and basement structures.

COURSE CONTENT

- Session 1: Eurocode framework - EC0, EC1, and EC2, including EN 1990 basis of design, EN 1991 actions, and EN 1992 concrete structures
- Session 2: Design codes for water-retaining structures - BS 8110, BS 8007, and EN 1992-3, including their relationship to EC0, EC1, and EC2
- Session 3: Design and construction issues - EN 1992-3, rectangular and cylindrical tanks, and prestressed-concrete applications
- Session 4: Tutorial on flotation checks and limit-state design for flexure and tension
- Session 5: Waterproofing design codes - BS 8102:2009, normative references, design philosophy, and water-resisting design under EC2
- Session 6: Waterproofing grades and joints - protection types and grades, joint detailing, and workmanship
- Session 7: Tutorial on conceptual design of large and mega reservoirs, including 6 MIG ground-level and 30 MIG partly underground reservoirs
- Session 8: Concrete water-tank design examples and possible IStructE CME solutions for above-ground tanks and underground flood-alleviation tanks
