CIVIL ENGINEERING FOR NON-CIVIL ENGINEERS
29 - 30 MARCH 2027
COURSE INTRODUCTION
This programme gives non-civil engineers and cross-functional personnel a practical introduction to civil engineering and its role in infrastructure and construction projects. Participants explore structural systems, foundations, ground conditions, roads, pavements and site activities, building a clearer understanding of how engineering decisions influence safety, quality, cost, maintenance and performance. Real-world examples, photographs, videos and interactive discussions help bridge technical gaps and improve coordination with civil-engineering teams.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Understand the principal branches of civil engineering and their practical applications.
- Recognise the roles of structural systems, foundations and ground conditions in construction projects.
- Develop familiarity with roads, pavements, construction methods and site activities.
- Improve interdisciplinary coordination and communication with civil-engineering teams.
- Gain awareness of developments and trends in civil-engineering practice.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Engineers and technicians from non-civil disciplines; executive and administrative staff in HR, procurement, finance, audit and legal functions; customer-service and corporate-communications personnel; non-technical operations, IT and logistics teams; safety, health and environment officers; and facilities, inventory and asset-management personnel who work with civil-engineering projects or infrastructure.
COURSE CONTENT
- Session 1: Civil engineering fundamentals: an introduction to the discipline, its principal branches and their relevance to infrastructure, construction and cross-functional work.
- Session 2: Understanding structural systems: a practical overview of building and infrastructure structural systems to support interpretation of basic engineering information and communication with technical teams.
- Session 3: Foundations and ground support: an introduction to foundation systems and the role of ground support in construction and infrastructure performance.
- Session 4: Geotechnical engineering and ground conditions: the importance of site investigation and understanding ground conditions when considering engineering decisions and common project issues.
- Session 5: Roads, pavements and infrastructure: an overview of these civil-engineering assets and their relationship to construction, operation, maintenance and performance.
- Session 6: Construction methods and site activities: practical awareness of construction processes and site work, using real-world examples and discussion to strengthen project coordination and oversight.
