GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCING (GD&T)
22 - 23 MARCH 2027
COURSE INTRODUCTION
This workshop develops practical skills in specifying and interpreting geometric dimensioning and tolerancing on mechanical engineering drawings. Participants explore the language of product definition, geometric symbols, datum references, material conditions and tolerance relationships. Drawing examples, calculations and group exercises connect design requirements with manufacturing, assembly and inspection decisions.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Understand dimensioning, tolerancing and the standards referenced in engineering drawings.
- Communicate product-definition requirements using GD&T symbols and conventions.
- Apply basic GD&T procedures and interpret material conditions and datum references.
- Evaluate composite tolerancing and feature-control-frame requirements.
- Select inspection approaches and measurement positions appropriate to the technical drawing.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Personnel involved in the design and interpretation of mechanical drawings, including those who apply drawing requirements to part manufacture, assembly, dimensional inspection and measurement.
COURSE CONTENT
- Session 1: GD&T fundamentals: geometry, dimensioning and tolerance definitions, applications and comparison of ASME, ISO and DIN standards.
- Session 2: Direct tolerancing and drawing rules: size and dimensional examples, the envelope principle, gears, splines and screws; lead-frame and hardware-component exercises.
- Session 3: Material conditions: regardless of feature size, maximum and least material conditions, virtual and resultant conditions, calculations and interpretation.
- Session 4: Symbols and composite tolerancing: common geometric characteristics, datum-reference applications and practical assessment exercises.
- Session 5: Combined-part requirements: simultaneous requirements, hole relationships, material conditions and their implications for machine settings.
- Session 6: Position and feature-control frames: composite position tolerance, two single-segment feature-control frames, drawing interpretation and assembly exercises.
- Session 7: Inspection and datum selection: measurement positions and methods, measurement-matrix development, datum reference frames and datum reference points.
- Session 8: Drawing workshops and assessment: decision diagrams, sample mechanical drawings, conversion from plus/minus to true-position tolerancing, review and questions and answers.
