
ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND PROTECTION

COURSE INTRODUCTION
This programme develops the practical awareness needed to work safely around electrical installations and protection systems. Participants examine electrical hazards, shock and arc-related risks, short circuits, earthing, protective devices, safe isolation and incident-prevention practices so they can recognise unsafe conditions and support safer inspection, operation and maintenance work.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Recognise electrical shock, arc, short-circuit and earth-fault hazards in the workplace.
- Apply risk assessment, safe isolation and verification practices before electrical work.
- Select appropriate personal protective equipment, insulated tools and work controls.
- Explain the purpose and operation of fuses, circuit breakers and earth-leakage protection.
- Relate earthing, cable selection and protective devices to installation safety.
- Interpret key duties under Malaysian electrical legislation and relevant MS IEC requirements.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This programme is suitable for engineers, electricians, chargemen, wiremen, technicians, supervisors, safety personnel, equipment operators and other employees who work on or near electrical installations.
COURSE CONTENT
- Electrical terminology, current paths and common short-circuit conditions
- Electric-shock mechanisms, arc-related hazards and workplace risk factors
- Risk assessment and controls for electrical installation and maintenance work
- Personal protective equipment, insulated tools and safe working procedures
- Safe isolation, verification and protection against earth-leakage current
- Electrical Supply Act 1990, Electricity Regulations 1994 and relevant MS IEC requirements
- Wiring, cable selection and protection based on load and installation conditions
- Competent-person responsibilities, inspection and maintenance requirements
