ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING FOR NON-ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS

25 - 26 NOVEMBER 2026

16 CDP Approved by ST; 20 CPD Approved by MBOT

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This programme gives non-electrical engineers and technical professionals a practical foundation in electrical systems used in industrial and building environments. Participants review electricity fundamentals, AC and DC, single-phase and three-phase supplies, distribution concepts, protection and safety so they can communicate and make routine technical decisions with greater confidence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
- Explain fundamental electrical quantities, AC and DC principles, power and power factor.
- Distinguish single-phase and three-phase systems and perform basic power calculations.
- Describe how electricity is generated, transmitted and distributed to industrial and building loads.
- Recognise the functions of transformers, switchgear, cables, motors and common distribution equipment.
- Apply essential electrical-safety, competent-control and earth-leakage protection practices.
- Explain earthing arrangements and the purpose of earth-electrode resistance.
- Evaluate electrical demand, tariff and power-factor information for basic cost and efficiency decisions.
- Describe the operating principles of motor starters and common power-system protection devices.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This programme is designed for architects, mechanical and civil engineers, plant and project engineers, operations and maintenance supervisors, technicians and other non-electrical professionals who collaborate on electrical installation, construction, operation or maintenance work.

COURSE CONTENT

- Session 1: Electrical fundamentals, including DC and AC, voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law, frequency, conductors and insulators, and active, apparent and reactive power with leading and lagging power factor
- Session 2: Electricity-supply specifications, applicable acts, regulations and codes, plus single- and three-phase systems, balanced and unbalanced loads, power relationships, and star and delta connections
- Session 3: The electrical power system from generation through transmission and distribution, covering energy sources, load profiles, renewable energy, transformers, switchgear, cables, substations, system losses, efficiency, and power-quality issues such as sags, swells, harmonics and surges
- Session 4: Electrical energy management in Malaysia, including relevant policies and legislation, the Efficient Management of Electrical Energy Regulations 2008 (EMEER 2008), sustainable energy-management practices, the Energy Manager's role, efficiency standards, and energy labelling
- Session 5: Electrical safety and earthing, covering causes of electrical failure, safe installation and maintenance, competent-person inspections, earth-leakage protection, earthing classifications and arrangements, termination, electrodes, and earth resistance
- Session 6: Electrical cost calculations and competent control, including energy-saving measures, tariffs and billing, power-factor improvement and surcharge, capacitor application, connected load, demand and load factors, and the duties, visits, inspections, maintenance and tests required of persons in charge
- Session 7: Electric-motor fundamentals, including AC and DC operating principles, motor types and speed, starter selection and ratings, DOL, star-delta, autotransformer and rotor-resistance starting, and motor protection
- Session 8: Power-system protection, covering protection objectives and concepts, relay requirements, and commonly used protection devices such as OCEF relays, MCBs and MCCBs
