A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO STEAM TURBINE - DESIGN, MAINTENANCE & OPERATION

26 - 27 OCTOBER 2026

16 CDP Approved by ST

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Steam turbines are versatile prime movers used extensively in power generation, combined heat and power applications, and industrial plants. Their capacities range from small units to large utility machines, and their efficiency and lower operating costs have made them a long-established alternative to reciprocating steam engines.

Because steam-turbine failures can interrupt production and cause costly consequential damage, operations and maintenance personnel need a sound understanding of turbine principles, construction, ancillary systems, safe operation and performance monitoring. This two-day programme provides that practical grounding and gives participants a forum to discuss plant issues and improvement ideas with an experienced trainer.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

- Explain the historical development of steam turbines and recognise key industry trends and manufacturers.
- Analyse Carnot, Rankine and practical steam-power cycles, including turbine efficiency and losses.
- Describe impulse and reaction designs, rotors, casings, drains and blade-attachment features.
- Explain the operation of valves, bearings, lubrication and control oil, gland steam, drains, supervisory, protection and control systems.
- Identify common operational problems involving performance degradation, bearing failures, vibration and component damage.
- Apply cylinder-efficiency, pressure-flow, steam-purity and maximum-capability monitoring concepts.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Experienced personnel working with steam turbines who need to refresh their knowledge, and newer operations or maintenance staff who need a sound foundation before working on specialised steam turbines.

COURSE CONTENT

- Review of thermodynamic power cycles and the history of steam turbines
- Classification of steam turbines by type, design, arrangement and application
- Mechanical design of steam-turbine blades
- Stop and control valves
- Gland-steam and drain systems
- Lubrication and control-oil systems, including bearings
- Supervisory and protection systems
- Proper operation, including safety and reliability considerations
- Performance monitoring and identification of performance degradation
- Steam-turbine component failures and their causes
